¿Te cuento cómo empezó todo? Can I tell you how this all started?

Hace un tiempo, dos mamás de mi oficina dijeron que les habría encantado tener “al menos un año” con sus bebés. Yo solo asentí, porque todavía no era mamá y no lo entendía del todo. Pero esa frase se me quedó grabada. Luego miré mi propio permiso, 16 semanas, e hice cuentas. Entre las facturas, el tiempo y el bebé, no me salían como yo quería. A while ago, two mums at my office said they wished they’d had “at least a year” with their babies. I just nodded, because I wasn’t a mum yet and didn’t really get it. But the sentence stayed with me. Then I looked at my own leave, 16 weeks, and did the maths. Between the bills, the time and the baby, it didn’t add up the way I wanted it to.

La cuestión es que no puedo dejar mi trabajo sin más. La mayoría no podemos. Así que me hice otra pregunta: ¿y si dejaba de esperar la respuesta perfecta y la construía, poco a poco, alrededor de mi vida? Encontré la forma de empezar un negocio propio junto a mi trabajo, con mis horarios y con una comunidad de mujeres que se apoyan entre ellas. Ahora mi pequeña ya está aquí, y puedo estar de verdad con ella mientras construyo algo que es mío. The thing is, I can’t just quit my job. Most of us can’t. So I asked myself a different question: what if I stopped waiting for the perfect answer and built one, little by little, around my life? I found a way to start a business of my own alongside my work, on my own schedule, and with a community of women who cheer each other on. Now my little girl is here, and I get to be fully with her while building something that’s mine.

Te lo cuento porque sé que muchas estáis haciendo las mismas cuentas en la cabeza. ¿Cuánto tiempo puedo quedarme en casa? ¿Nos lo podemos permitir? ¿Me lo voy a perder todo? No estás exagerando y no estás sola. Yo también me hice esas preguntas. I’m telling you this because I know there are so many of you doing the same sums in your head. How long can I stay home? Can we afford it? Will I miss everything? You’re not being dramatic and you’re not alone. I asked those questions too.
